We have a 6 month old cat that ate a small piece of thread. I saw it wrapped around the tongue. I unwrapped it and then down it went.

He is not eating much and drinking some. We took it to the Vet and he says short of a 1000 dollar surgery, there is nothing to do but hope the cat passes the string. There was no needle attached. We had an Xray taken. The cost of surgery is prohibitive for us.

Does anyone have any advice about how to keep the cat hydrated and how to feed it (force feeding, if necessary) or what it will abolutely eat (fish?). And does anyone know of any home remedies or laxatives to assist in the passing of any food we can get it to eat.

Any advise you can offer would be appreciated.

Cat laxatives, like Laxatone, are available at the local pet store. Usually those products are to help a cat pass hairballs, but it might be worth a try. I'm afraid I don't have any other suggestions, other than checking with the vet for advice.

Keep us posted on how your kitty is doing.

I read one tip in a reference book I thought I should post. If kitty starts to pass the thread, and part of it is protruding from the kitty's anus, don't pull the rest of the thread out yourself. Kitty might end up very hurt internally. Instead, you can cut off the protruding thread, and call the vet.
