Jees, it only took over 2 years, but I finally figured out how to clip my dog's nails. First of all, I had the wrong type of clipper. I had the clipper type, which opens and closes sideways. I was never comfortable with it.
I visited a girlfriend and I had her cut my dog's nails. She used the "guillotine" type (which is what I thought I had). I tried them and they're much more comfortable in the hand.
My dog is small, so she held him on her lap, on his back, and trimmed his nails from the paws-up position. (Like putting our hands palms-up, viewing the underside of our nails). From this angle you can see the outside nails and middle quicks. (Dog has black nails).
So much easier!
I bought the right type of tool, and I began to try just a couple of nails, getting the hang of it. After about 4 times, I am now able to have my dog lie on his back with his paws in the air while I trim his nails. No bleeding! No squealing! No stress! And I'm already comfortable enough with it that my dog fell asleep last night while I trimmed. Hallelujah! |
