What are the benefits of owning a pet? And the drawbacks?

benefits: they make me happier, calmer, I know I always have somebody to go back to, they taught me responsibility and they are cute!

drawbacks: you have to adapt to them (cats are independent and not really trainable...) and you have to think about their needs.

Benefits: Dogs make you feel like a god, cats remind you of your humanity. Both are good.

Drawbacks: You've gone out with your SO, romantic dinner, dancing, and walking through the park. S/he invites you in! Looks up at you with eyes shining in the starlight--eyes that say, "I'm ready."

And you go, "Uh, I have to take care of my dog."

And the sad thing, the truly sad thing, is you really mean it!

Cheers,

Genesius

I can think of times when I was kissing my SO and the cat decided it was time to interfere! He either jumped in our laps begging for caresses or played with our clothing or started fighting the female cat all over the place, including our bodies!

Try living with dogs who want to be with you all the time, who get to sleep on the bed, and when they're locked out of the bedroom for any length of time, wimper and paw at the door to get in....

This reminds me of the first day when I brought Purr home from the animal shelter. I'd never had a cat before, and I remember holding Purr on the sofa, wondering what I had done, and what on earth was I going to do with this cat. So, I called my SO at the time, and asked him to come over. He did, and we had a good time playing with the kitten. When it was night time, we went in my room and shut the door. Purr stood outside the door, cried, wimpered, and pawed at the door so much I finally let her in. As I recall, that pretty much killed any romantic plans for the evening. I didn't get much sleep that night, though. Purr kept jumping on the bed, and crawling on top of me.

My SO dumped me a couple of weeks later. Maybe a small part of it was it's either me or the cat. I think the cat was the better choice!

:) Purr... I can soooooo relate to that!
They cry, jump around and pick up fights with just about anything if they don't get the attention they want!
My male cat is meowing all the time when he craves attention... it's quite hard to ignore him!!!

It's really great! I heard also that caressing your cat helps calming the nervous feelings.

The biggest drawback is their life span. The pet you love so much will only live, what 20 years at the most, and when they leave, it's devastating.

My dog died two months ago and I'm still reeling.
