It is well known the cats adore the smell of valerian. If I drink valerian drops and leave the glass at the table, my cat smells it energetically and even turns over the glass. But once I gave him valerian drops mixed with water, he smelled it, but didn't want to drink or lick. :o

Valerian is a herb tincture, which is used as light sedative. In Moldova these drops are used widely, I'm surprised you haven't heard about it. It is considered the cats adore the smell of valerian and become like drunk if they lick it.

I found a reference to valerian in The New Natural Cat by Anitra Frazier. Valerian is described as a medicial herb, or "nature's tranquilizer".

A dose of the powdered root, or even the smell of the powder, calms the nervous system. Valerian is used as an antispasmotic (relieves spasms or convulsions) or a mild tranquilzer. Valerian was specifically recommended for treating arthritis pain, concussions, and nervousness or ill temper.

Many cats enjoy the smell of valerian.
