Is it just for asthetic reasons?
And what is it? My neighbors dog has its ears wrapped up, and I'm assuming thats why? Poor dog doesnt look pleased about it. |

Some breeds started getting their ears and tails cropped because they were used as police dogs and without ear flaps and tail, there wasn't much to grab the dog by. Later on the "fashion" stayed even for the home pets. At least that's the explanation I heard when my Giant Schnauzer's ears were cropped.
The thing she really missed was her tail, though. She has a huge inferiority complex about it! Any time she saw a big dog with a big tail, she'd chase the dog and nip at the tail as a game. The bigger the dog and the tail, the more excited she'd get.
Then there was that one time when she saw a horse... :roll: |

| I think the practice of clipping dogs' ears and tails is being made illegal in the state of California, thanks to the lobbying of animal acitvists. I, too, think the practice is pretty cruel... |

| Thanks for the explanations. So, as I understood it is more an esthetic operation. As for me, I'm against any operations which are unnecessary for animals. |

I saw a neighbor dog who had this done to him years ago. I couldn't believe it! I think it's cruel and they shouldn't do it, esp. to pets! It's nice to know at least there was a reason they did it in the first place.
