So, we are planning to get a puppy (one for now, another later, to keep eachother company), eventhough we live in an apartment with no yard!

What breeds do you think would be suitable...?

We've already made our choice, but I'm interested to see what everyone thought.....

i remember having a puppy and no yard. that was hard.

how big is your apt?

if i had to do it again i'd go for a small breed that could use a litter box.

Indeed.

We've decided on a Japanese breed called Shiba Inu. It is the smallest of spitz breeds & shares ancestry with Akita.

I've also found an interesting article on litter training dogs: http://www.kturby.com/litter/litter.htm

Has anyone done this with their pets? Any experience to share?

Eventhough we are working things out with the breeders, the final decision is yet to come. We need to be sure that the puppy WILL be safe & happy with our lifestyle & environment..........

Here's the update, Jonathan.

We've decided not to go ahead at this point, because to make it 100% safe & comfortable for us AND the puppy, there will be *a lot* of modification to the apartment (not to mention the frequent walks as we don't have ANY yard).

There's the open balcony (3 floors high) issue. We need to put perspex over the balastrades so the puppy won't go through. We also get visiting possums almost every night, so we might need to install an overhead awning (with adjustable pitch, so it would be best motorised..$$$...) to keep the puppy from flying over trying to catch them......

Shiba dogs are little hunters. They climb trees & play little Hudinis  ........we got stories from our breeders.

We are still going to see the puppies :D ..... we like to keep in touch for future puppies, when we get a bigger place  !

Wanna see pics...?

Ummm, I'll give this a try, but...

Are the photos on line somewhere? If not, that's the problem, and since I see the urls all starting witha "D", I'm thinking maybe you're trying to display them ooff your computer. If that's the case, and if they are not somewhere on line, maybe add the photos to the DF album, and then link acros to those images?
