There has been a lot of information in the media about polar bears being at risk.
The Polar Bear Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union estimates that the polar bear population in the Artic has dwindled to 25,000. The group lists the polar bear among the more than 16,000 species worldwide whose survival is threatened. The group projects a 30 percent drop in their numbers during the next 45 years. The group says sea ice, the home for the bears, is expected to shrink by 50 percent or so in the next 50 to 100 years.
The U.S. government describes the bears as a "threatened" species. The "endangered" category is reserved for species more likely to become extinct. |
