Have you ever known anyone with unusual pets?
I've know people who have pot-bellied pigs, ferrets, tarantulas...what else have you seen? |

They are these cute possum-like creatures that live in trees & glide between branches by making themselves into kites using the web between front & back legs.
Like most things down under, our ones are marsupials ! |

I hear that they have marsupial malamutes down under too--at least those who are crossed with dingos and devils.... |

| In Japan, a lot of kids keep rhinoceros beetles. They can get up to 4 inches long and are pitch black and they totally freak me out! Kids also collect cicadas(more of the same, although they screech "reeeen reeeen reeeeen" and pee on you in mid-air when they take off!). Cicadas are abundant in the summer, and gather on my cherry trees, and some of the little boys I teach English to bring their bug cages and forage in my yard for the critters. (Not many folks have much of a yard here.) Mom waits in the car and I kinda wait on my porch, where a cicada won't squirt me... |

| A former co-worker had 2 ferrets as pets. She liked them, although I recall she said of them was a little agressive. I seem to recall she had to have them "de-scented" meaning having their glands removed. |

I met a woman who had one here and she said it's just like keeping a cat! My girl freind in the states was with me at the time and she said that those pets aren't allowed in the state of California(rodent law?). Fill me in on this one if you know about it... |

| I think the laws vary from state to state. I'll see what I can find out. |

I once saw a documentary where some guy had a cockroach collection- roaches from around the world, in little cages, all around his apartment! He admitted he didn't have a girlfriend! (I wonder WHY???? ) |

From what I was able to find out, here are a list of places where ferrets are not legal:
California
Hawaii
Washington, DC
Dallas, Ft. Worth, Beaumont, and other cities in TX
Bloomington and Burnsville, MN
Columbus, OH
Tulsa, OK
Puerto Rico
Permits or licenses are required in order to own ferrets in the following places: New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Illinois. Permits are also required in St. Paul, MN. While ferrets are not illegal in NYC or Minneapolis, MN, they may be confisgated or ticketed.
Some of these laws may be changing. For example, I ran across a few things regarding California. Please check your local laws, and obtain the necesary permit (if required) before buying a ferret. |

| Interesting about ferets being illegal. You said they can be a little aggressive? I'm curious why they would be illegal. I know one person who has a feret and the problem they had was the feret got into EVERYTHING. |
